Next to the Oratorio per la Settimana Santa «Giuseppe» is without a doubt Rossi'd greatest oratorio, both in length as well as in musical intensity. The work consists of two cantatas in which relatively brief section of the Old Testament depicition of dramatic action, the main thrust is on the expression of emotions, for example in the heart-rending lamento of Joseph's brothers. There is a clear relationship between this work and the opera, another genre that was in full evolution at that time.
