The Birnauer Kantorei was founded in the summer of 1966 and made its public debut with an Advent concert in the renovated basilica of Birnau in the same year. The ensemble has since given regular concerts in Salem and Reichenau and has been on tour mainly in southern Germany. Its repertoire comprises all periods of sacred choral music as well as instrumental and orchestral music of the baroque and classical periods. In addition to radio and television appearances, the Birnauer Kantorei das also made numerous recordings in the 24 years of its existence, including the first recording of choral arrangements of songs by Annette von Droste-Hülshoff, which were also written on the shore of Lake Constance and have certain affinity in style and content with the Lahusen cycle.

Klaus Reiners, a church musician born in Wilhelmshaven in 1934, is the ensemble's artistic director.
