The Amati Quartet, founded in 1981, won the Premier Grand Prix at the International Competition of Evian in France in 1982, after studying with the Alban Berg Quartet in Vienna. It obtained valuable impulses from its work with the Amadeus Quartet, the Bartok Quartet and with Walter Levin, the leader of the LaSalle Quartet. The four musicians concentrate above all on Classical and Romantic quartet literature. Moreover, they frequently enhance their programs by bringing together traditional masterpieces and little-known compositions of great value, for example, works by Szymanowski, Tailleferre, Thomas etc. Their interest in contemporary music is documented by a number of world premieres.
