Giovanni Battista Pescetti

{ Biography }

The son of the organist Giacinto Pescetti, Giovanni Battista Pescetti, was born in Venice and died there as well. He studied with Antonio Lotti and came into contact with Johann Adolf Hasse and Baldassare Galuppi in the early part of his career. In 1725 he made his debut as a composer of operas and enjoyed considerable success in this field. Five yearrs later he was called to Rome by Cardinal Ottoboni to write the music for a major festivity. In 1734 he settled in London, where he succeeded Porpora as director of the opera at the Covent Garden, but left England in 1747 to return to Venice. He was appointed organist of San Marco in 1762.
