Baldassare Galuppi

(1706—1785)

{ Biography }

Born in Burano, Galuppi studied composition and harpsichord with Antonio Lotti. In 1740 he was named choral director of the Ospedale dei Mendicanti, but left for London the following year and staged several operas at the Haymarket Theatre there. Back in Venice, he was appointed vice-maestro di cappella at San Marco in 1748 and elevated to the rank of maestro di cappella there in 1762. Three years later Czarina Catherine invited him to Saint Petersburg, where he worked as court music director until 1768. He then returned to Venice, where he composed chiefly sacred music and oratorios for the Incurabili. He was a very prolific composer of operas, instrumental music and sacred works.
