Rainer Schmidt studied violin with A. Aydintan in Hannover and D. Delay in Cincinnati. In the same town he became pupil of Walter Levin of the LaSalle Quartet who became the most important person for his following musical studies. Later on Harnoncourt, T. Grindenko and I.Gitlis influenced his approach towards music. In the last years R. Schmidt has been focusing mostly on understanding the interpretation of the music for chamber music groups like string quartet and piano trio. Since 1987 he is member of the Hagen Quartet and he co-founded the Ravinia Trio in 1989. He has performed in many countries of Europe, the United States and Japan with artists like Gérard Caussé, David Geringas, Tatjana Grindenko, Paul Gulda, Nobuko Imai, Gidon Kremer, Oleg Maisenberg, Mischa Meisky, Boris Pergamenschikov, Heinrich Schiff, Tabea Zimmermann and others.
