Ensemble Diferencias

{ Read Biography }

Diferencias in Spanish means ornaments, those little changes that can inject life into music. And making changes often means making a «difference», too: enticing new sounds from a piece of music. But when something has once been spoken, one needs an intermediary to bring it to speak again. Just as water letzs the Jericho rose bloom again even after a long period of dryness, so can the human breath infuse new life into the musical calligraphy of past centuries. The sounds of a wind instrument can uncover hidden treasures, flute tones can give crisp contours to what has become indistinct, and fourfold recorders can add new color to what has lost its brightness. With their multi-faceted Renaissance recorders, a refined feeling for sound and a prodigious fantasy, Diferencias sheds light onto what has long been hidden in darkness.

Helma Franssen. Born in Eindhoven (Netherlands), she came to Basle to obtain her diploma in recorder playing from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis after completing her studies in classical dance. She has concertized in Switzerland and abroad (including together with Harnoncourt's Concentus Musicus).

Urs Haenggli. Born in Zurich (Switzerland), he studied the recorder in his native city and at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis with W. Weilenmann and C. Steinmann. The founder of the Cappella Concertante chamber orchestra and of the Ars noviqua ensemble, he is also a committed supporter of contemporary music and has taken part in numerous world premieres.

Conrad Steinmann. Born in Rapperswil (Switzerland), he persued his studies at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, where he has been a lecturer since 1982. He has given concerts and classes throughout Europe, in Japan and Australia, as well as in Israel and Moscow. He can frequently be heard with Johann Sonnleitner, the Ensemble 415 and the London Baroque. Conrad Steinmann, who is particularly devoted to the music of ancient Greece, has produced recordings for the labels Claves, Jecklin and Harmonia Mundi.
